Back home

Just a short update that I had a warm welcome home from my housemate, Ester, and her son Blessing. I also met Blessing’s new nanny, Ester’s cousin, Natalia.

I will miss Martha, Blessing’s former nanny, and our frequent walks and talks. Martha found another job, closer to her family, and considers it a better fit. I’m happy for her.

She told me I was the first white person she ever really talked with. She thought she didn’t like white people and had nothing to say to them. We talked about our faith, about our values, about our families, and our dreams. We had plenty to talk about. We also enjoyed laughing at the funny things toddler Blessing would do. Laughing at kids is a universal pleasure.

  1. I’m just catching up on your last three posts. I’ve been helping my own mom (96) recover from her fall just after Christmas. She missed a step and pitched onto my friend’s carport, but luckily escaped with a cracked rib, pulled back muscle and some impressive bruises. She’s independent and determined, recovering at home just with ice, heat, and Motrin. I can also relate to your friendship with Martha. I spent time with two of my friend Mary Beth’s nannies while her son Christian and my Joseph were young. Lots of playground and mealtime conversations, fun and educational for all as they were polishing English skills while I was trying to learn some Spanish. Little Joseph picked some up too!
Good luck settling back into teacher life.

    1. I’m sorry about your Mom and understand the independent and determined. I hope she recovers well. These falls are tough and pretty hard to avoid at their age. Martha and I would laugh at our attempts to understand each other, we kept at it and sometimes it would be days later when we’d realize what the other meant. Take care.
